Basic Report
For routine desiccant packaging, a Basic Report allows customers to confidently predict their desiccant requirements. A standard list of desiccant types are considered for optimisation. It does not account for more complicated systems. For example, when the product plays a role in the pouch humidity, or when there are multiple consumer interactions (e.g. bottle lid openings).

Intermediate Report
In addition to the above, this report considers the application of more exotic desiccant types (such as a desiccant polymer and desiccant foils), or more complicated storage conditions, beyond simple moisture removal (e.g. when a specific RH range is required), This report also considers the speed of adsorption of the desiccant within the pack, during for the initial drying phase, and the effect on product efficacy.

Advanced Report
This report is bespoke, with the full range of CFD modelling tools applied. It allows for the allows for the calculation of in-pack humidity where the product itself has a significant adsorption profile (multi-desiccant adsorption). On request, an interactive online app can be built to allow the customer to interact with the developed model, and run their own calculations live on demand.
Although it’s the most costly and complex report available from us, it is worth noting that the Advanced Report is the package that normally allows for massive savings, in both customer lead-time and product development budget.

Dr Mark Valentine is a recognised authority in packaging desiccants and computational moisture modelling. He leads our R&D and brings a rare combination of academic rigour and practical industry insight. Mark completed his PhD at the University of Oxford in the Chemical Engineering research group, specialising in multiphase flow and gas-liquid thermodynamics. Since joining Baltimore Innovations in 2012, he has developed advanced modelling tools that allow precise prediction of humidity behaviour inside sealed packaging. He is a regular speaker at pharmaceutical packaging and medical technology conferences across Europe and has helped numerous companies eliminate persistent moisture-related failures. What is moisture control consultancy?
Moisture control consultancy is a specialised service that focuses on analysing, predicting, and managing moisture behaviour within a sealed packaging atmosphere for your products. We use a combination of moisture vapour transmission rate analysis, water vapour permeability modelling, and desiccant adsorption calculations. The moisture control consultancy evaluates how environmental humidity interacts with your packaging materials and internal headspace over time. This includes:
- Predicting moisture ingress through barrier materials such as PET, aluminium laminates, and polymer films
- Assessing relative humidity stability inside sealed packaging
- Calculating desiccant requirements based on product hygroscopicity
- Identifying risks of condensation, degradation, or reduced shelf life
The outcome is a set of data-driven recommendations covering:
- Optimal barrier packaging structures
- Correct desiccant type and sizing
- Packaging design improvements to prevent moisture-related failure
This approach eliminates reliance on trial-and-error and provides a scientific basis for packaging validation and shelf-life optimisation
How long does a typical packaging consultancy project take?
The duration depends on the complexity of the product, materials, and required validation depth. Typically our packaging consultancy timeline can vary from 8–12 weeks for full packaging optimisation (including multiple scenarios and validation support). Certain packaging consultancy projects can be 12+ weeks, this will depend on the number of packaging configurations assessed. Availability of material permeability data (MVTR, WVTR), Product sensitivity and hygroscopic behaviour.
Do you offer shelf-life analysis for medical devices and pharmaceuticals?
Yes. Shelf-life analysis for pharmaceutical moisture control packaging and medical device humidity protection are core areas of expertise. We support clients in identifying shelf-life requirements for moisture-sensitive formulations and medical devices. Our shelf life analysis services include pharmaceutical packaging moisture analysis and packaging validation support. We also recommend desiccant sizing for drug products and diagnostic kits.
Can you help with moisture risk-assessment based on regional or climate-specific issues?
Absolutely. Moisture risk assessment is a key part of our humidity packaging simulation service, We model how packaging performs under real-world global shipping and storage conditions. We can simulate high humidity tropical environments (e.g. Southeast Asia, Latin America) temperature and humidity cycling during air and sea freight, cold chain transitions and condensation risks. In our moisture risk assessment, we also factor long-term storage in varying regional climates using computational moisture analysis and environmental modelling.
