Client Success with Desiccant Plastics

This Month: Diagnostic Test Kits

September has been busy for us. This month I’ve been working with a client whose aim was to develop a diagnostic kit that allows for at-home testing of infectious diseases.

One of the issues that the client wanted to solve was: ‘How to integrate a source of desiccant onto a form-fill-and-seal packaging line; where the desiccant ends-up fixed in-place within the foil pouch?’ This requirement arose because the client did not want a standard desiccant sachet, which would be free to move around inside the pack and possibly damage their diagnostic device.

We proposed our SUPERDRYPAK™ Desiccant Plastic which was tailored to a suitable thickness and surface area, to protect the product for the duration of its desired shelf-life. This task was made quicker and easier because we were able to model the size of desiccant plastic required, using our unique SUPERDRYSIM™ Software.

We then produced this film in the form of “desiccant plastic labels” which were backed with a self-adhesive layer, and supported on a web of polyester, wound onto a roll. This format allowed the desiccants to be indexed and placed onto the packaging foil, at high speed and with a high degree of accuracy. The compatibility issues of this project were eased by the fact that we’d already been supplying this customer with B-SURE Foil for a number of years. This led to a ‘single supplier solution’ for the client, and far fewer headaches as a result !

At the end of this project, the client was able to produce an elegant package that solved the integration of a flat and fixed desiccant, which was both lightweight and low-profile.

Those seeking more information should note this plastic can incorporate up to 60% desiccant content; which will then slowly and continuously absorb moisture within the pack, promoting product stability and accuracy of your test kit results !
