SUPERDRYPAK™

SUPERDRYPAK™ Desiccant Packs are small bags of desiccant (drying material) wrapped in a paper-like sachet material. The desiccant contained within them can be; Clay Powder, Silica Gel or Molecular Sieve. Each one of these desiccants has their own unique performance characteristics.

SUPERDRYPAK™ Molecular Sieve Packets contain Zeolite Beads (which are also known as “molecular sieve” desiccants). This material is a drying agent with pores (voids or holes), that absorb individual water molecules, via Van Der Waals forces.

Molecular sieve packets are the most aggressive form of desiccant used in industry, due to their high affinity for humidity and moisture.

Our desiccant packs are designed to adsorb moisture/humidity from the air. The amount of water that each type of desiccant pack can absorb depends on the type of desiccant contained within the pack. For example, Molecular Sieve Packets can adsorb <23% of their own weight, and Silica Gel Packets can absorb <35% of their own weight.

In favour of Molecular Sieve Packets, it’s worth stating that they are far more aggressive than those based on silica gel, and even though they won’t absorb as much, what they do absorb will be done far more vigorously. For example: Desiccant Packs filled with Molecular Sieve will take the Relative Humidity down to 0% RH, compared to those filled with Silica Gel (which will only take the Relative Humidity down to 5% RH).

As you can see, there is a trade-off between ‘aggressiveness of adsorption’, and the ‘total capacity for adsorption’ with each type of desiccant material. SUPERDRYPAK™ Molecular Sieve Packets are used in a wide range of markets, for example: in the Pharmaceutical Sector (where they are used to protect pills and powders) and in the Medical Device Sector (where they are used to protect POC (Point of Care) test kits and home-diagnosis test kits).

Nutraceutical products also use them, as well as manufacturers of long-life foods and other dehydrated goods.

What are the benefits of SUPERDRYPAK™ Molecular Sieve Desiccants, compared to SUPERDRYPAK™ Silica Gel Packets? …The answer is pretty straightforward to understand:

Our Silica Gel Desiccant Packets have high absorptive capacity (approximately 35% of their own starting weight). However, due to their chemical structure, they will struggle to reduce the Relative Humidity of your sealed environment below 5% RH. This is completely fine for most applications – but for those products that require a completely dry package, SUPERDRYPAK™ Molecular Sieve Desiccant Packs are a better option. This is because they will reduce the %RH down to 0% (the only issue being that they have a lower total capacity for water, which means that you sometimes need to increase the size of molecular sieve packet, in order to absorb the same quantity of humidity).
